The municipality of Dobrepolje in cooperation with Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia has invited applications for public, project, architectural competition for a School and a Sport centre of the Elementary school in Dobrepolje, Slovenia.
Competition objective is: solutions for a new kindergarten and a gymnasium of the existing elementary school, outdoor sport facilities (school and kindergarten playgrounds, a circular running track at 60 m, a long jump track, a sand volleyball playground) and an outdoor area of the elementary school.
The project enables appropriate development of the educational complex in phases. The solution establishes qualitative contact with natural conditions of the site and recognizes its surrounding characteristics successfully. Each phase of the project functions as an independent whole regardless of the project dynamics.
The gymnasium building, situated between the existing school and outdoor sport areas, is oriented to the south with the main facade. The building volume follows a terrain configuration. It is partially entrenched therefore it forms a smaller volume toward the school building. Big glass surfaces on the southern facade enable transparency of the building in the north-south direction, looking towards playgrounds located within natural environment. The main sport gymnasium hall is a light, open and airy space – a sport hall becomes a school “living room”, a space convenient for both, for school sport activities and a school/kindergarten and for municipality events as well.
The kindergarten is conceived as a single storey, slightly folded building that opens into quality outdoor area of the complex with its east facade. The connectivity of outdoor spaces is exceptionally clear and of a high quality because it provides collective green areas which can be used by existing and new facilities.
The kindergarten ground plan is organized in the way that concentrates administrative and service programmes on the west side, oriented to the street, while all children’s playrooms are oriented eastward to the green and woody area.
The uniformity of design – an equal design principle of the kindergarten and of the gymnasium – results with unified image of the complex, it also generates a new identity to the complex, despite its heterogeneous content.
